What is an email alias?
An email alias is an additional address that receives or forwards messages without becoming your everyday primary address. Depending on the provider, it may deliver to your normal inbox, a separate folder or a dedicated mailbox.
Aliases are useful because email addresses often become long-lived identifiers. Using the same address for shopping, newsletters, forums and important accounts makes it easier for records from different services to be connected.
Good uses for an alias
- Online shops and one-off purchases.
- Newsletters, competitions and downloads.
- Community forums and public profiles.
- Apps or websites you are trying for the first time.
- Separating personal, financial and work-related accounts.

An alias is a privacy boundary, not complete anonymity. The forwarding provider may still process delivery information, and the website may identify you through other details you supply.

- Protect the destination inbox. Use a strong, unique password and two-step verification.
- Do not recycle immediately. An old service may continue sending account or recovery messages.

Aliases versus “plus addressing”
Some email providers let you add a label after a plus sign, such as name+shopping@example.com. It is convenient for sorting, but the underlying address is easy to recognise because a sender can remove the label. A separately generated alias usually creates a stronger boundary.
